Robert Thornton has dedicated his life to helping the special needs and disabled community. He is the founder of Paper Clouds Apparel. The whole mission of his business is really just to help and serve the special needs community. Robert has come up with a really interesting and unique way to do that, with t-shirts.
The story of Paper Clouds Apparel began when Robert was visiting his parents several years ago. He noticed some artwork on the refrigerator and discovered that it was a gift to his mother from a young girl with special needs who rode her bus. This sparked an idea, and suddenly, Robert was a man on a mission.
Paper Clouds Apparel teams up with special needs causes, communities and organizations for fundraising in a very creative way. Here’s how it works: People with special needs create artwork, then a selection of designs are printed on t-shirts, tote bags and hats. People buy the wares and 50% of the profits go back to the organization PCA teamed up with at the start. Pretty cool, right? Robert has taken his business idea a step further to support adults with special needs as well. Tune in to find out just what he’s doing.
Do you think you know someone with special need’s who’s artwork should be on a t-shirt? Robert and I have chatted about designing a competition for Bringing Up Betty listeners. If you have a child or family member who would like to participate in something like this, and an organization you’d like to support, please let me know! Here’s a quick survey that will help me gauge your interest level. If you have tons of fans (or friends or family members) who might consider buying a shirt, please share this with them as well.
